There are free weights that are used by those taking part in weight training among which are dumbbell weights. The name dumbbell originated from the late Stuart England which referred to some sort of equipment used when simulating the bell rope action used to develop strength and technique. The term dumb was used because while practicing bell ringing one was not meant to utter any word.
It is when the strongmen started making the equipment that the form and shape changed although the named was retained. The shape that we see today with equal weights on either side of a handle was already in use in the seventeenth century. Dumbbells are currently categorized into 3 types, the fixed weight, adjustable and selectorized dumbbells.
In adjustable dumbbells there is a metal bar with a crosshatch pattern engraved on the centre portion of it so as to improve grip when lifting. Additional plates or weight disks can put by sliding them on the outer portions and then secured using collars or clips. Those with threaded ends are called spinlock dumbbells and they use large nuts as collars.
Sprung collars are also used to secure the plates especially in dumbbells that have smooth ends. Many dumbbells that are commercially sold today are usually made with easy to use and sophisticated methods of weight increment and adjustment. Fixed weight dumbbells refer to those that are normally made and shaped like a dumbbell.
These weights usually have inexpensive varieties which normally consist of cast iron. These sometimes can be coated with neoprene or rubber, something which is done to improve comfort when using them. There are also some cheaper versions which consist of rigid plastic shells which in most cases are filled with concrete.
The selectorized dumbbells are also adjustable dumbbells and they have a number of plates that are quite easy to change as they rest in the stand used to hold dumbbells. To do this the number of plates are adjusted to follow the handle on lifting for example the dial can be turned or by moving a selector pin. This is opposed to the usual way of manually removing or adding plates.
The advantage of using these particular dumbbells is that the disks can be easily changed in between exercises. Another purpose of the stand is storage of additional dumbbell weights not in use during a particular exercise. The weight of the disks used range from one pound to 15 pounds.
