New mothers usually experience a lot of different emotions immediately after giving birth. Some of these emotions can make the mother depressed. A day can be characterized by feelings of joy, sadness, and fear all in one day. Most mothers are able to go through this period successfully, and they get better when the period lapses. Some mothers manage to go through the condition alone while others need help. This is what Ayurveda Postpartum entails.

However, the emotions act as a huge obstacle for some mothers to go through the postpartum period successfully. Some end up being affected by postpartum depression (PPD). The everyday life of such mothers can be affected if the feelings of sadness become too severe, something that can lead to depression.

Symptoms of PPD usually set in a few weeks after one has given birth and develop fast in most cases. In some cases however, they may take as long as six weeks to develop completely. When fully developed, PPD can be a very serious condition that requires immediate medical intervention. Symptoms are many and wide, including difficulty making decisions or thinking, trouble boding with the baby, and mood swings.

Statistics indicate that in the United States, among every seven women, one develops PPD. In case one feels depressed, they should visit a doctor for a proper diagnosis. The doctor needs the patient to explain how they feel I detail in order for them to assess the symptoms and formulate a treatment plan. In most cases, the treatment plan involves antidepressants and psychotherapy.

However, there are several ways of avoiding PPD. One of these ways is to hire a postpartum doula to provide company and help after delivery. These doulas are specialists in taking care of new mothers by talking and listening to them so that they do not feel lonely. They also help mothers to bond with their babies better and can catch any symptoms of PPD in advance and get the mother the help they need.

Mothers are given time to rest while the doula helps with daily duties that the mother may have. Sometimes, PPD can be caused by lack of enough rest. Besides taking care of the baby, mothers also do other activities like housekeeping, laundry, and cooking. This can make them depressed due to stress and fatigue caused by lack of rest. This can be avoided by the presence of doulas.

For doulas to provide these services, they have to undergo special training. Midwives, obstetricians, family doctors and pediatricians can provide good referrals for doulas. Information about good doulas can also be obtained from women centers, churches, the internet, breastfeeding support groups, local family services agencies and local hospitals.

Despite having doulas, mothers should also play an active role in order to recover fully. Doing exercise can help with preventing PPD. However, the exercise should be light to avoid further complications. Such exercise include walking for short distances and walking with the baby in a stroller. It is also advisable to eat a balanced diet.
